GolfInvestors, a series of Golf Stock Markets with a current market capitalization of over $225,000,000 and a daily volume of around 238,000 shares, is fast becoming a popular option for golf fans who want to invest in their favorite players with the goal of financial gain.
The concept is a simple one - shares of professional golfers are bought and sold with real money the same way companies are bought and sold on the New York Stock exchange and other markets around the world. If a player performs well in a tournament, the stock price goes up and the investor may sell for a profit. If the player performs poorly, on the other hand, the price generally falls.
In January of this year, before her wrist injury, Michelle Wie's stock was being traded at $62 per share (with a minimum of 10 shares) on the GolfInvestors market. Her stock is currently trading at an all-time low of $9 per share.
By contrast, Tiger Wood's stock is currently trading at $914, more than a 22 percent increase over the $700 price investors paid just four months ago, in April of this year.
A staggering $9,130,000 has been invested in Tiger thus far, with a total of over 256,000 shares being traded.
GolfInvestors also features a developmental market where speculators may invest in and finance up-and-coming players. Newly turned professional, Tadd Fujikawa, is listed in the exchange (TAFUA2 is his ticker symbol); as is former Hawaii resident and Schofield Barracks soldier Chad Saladin, and Tom Purtzer, brother of The Hawaii Golf Journal's own Paul Purtzer, who is traded on the Seniors market.
According the GolfInvestors website, "The goal of the GolfInvestors stock markets is to create a liquid and transparent financial market environment for small entities (i.e. professional golfer). The environment is similar to the trading environment seen on such worldly markets as the New York Stock Exchange, the NASDAQ, the London Stock Exchange, and the Frankfurt Stock Exchange."
One of the fascinating nuances of this innovative exchange is the ability to buy and sell real-time as players are competing in tournaments. Investors routinely make investment decisions based on real time tournament performance.
The website features both a real money section and a simulated section, where would be investors can try their luck with no risk involved.
